Background
Oky is the world’s first period-tracking app designed specifically for young girls, created by UNICEF with direct input from girls themselves. Built to deliver approachable information and help girls understand and track their menstrual health, Oky uses a fun and positive tone through mobile-first content and storytelling. UNICEF sought a global communications partner to strengthen the brand’s visibility, build a digital community, and support app adoption across multiple regions. I was part of the team (as consultants) that were assigned to the project
Challenges
The brand needed to scale awareness across diverse cultural contexts while keeping messaging safe, empowering, and accessible to a young audience. This required a
communication approach that balanced educational clarity with playful creativity, while also strengthening trust among parents, educators, and stakeholders. The team needed to create digital content and research-driven communication that worked globally while feeling relatable locally, all within a sensitive subject area.
Outcome
We developed a communication system centered on playful educational storytelling and emotionally resonant visuals that made menstrual health approachable and supportive. Digital content, animations, illustrations, and character-driven narratives helped cultivate a global community of young users and supporters. Research toolkits and stakeholder communication assets aided rollout in new regions, and Oky’s digital presence expanded its visibility through international media features and partnerships as the platform continued scaling to new countries.
